The dedicated staff of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) are embarking on an extraordinary journey. From today, September 15, they will be walking and running a collective 500 miles as part of the ‘Rehab 500’ challenge. This ambitious endeavour aims to raise funds for a crucial piece of equipment—a ‘MOTOmed’ rehabilitation bike, which could cost up to £12,000 depending on the specification.
This innovative equipment is designed to support early physical rehabilitation for critically ill patients, allowing them to begin their recovery journey even while still in intensive care. The ICU team, in collaboration with Bay Hospitals Charity, has already trialled the over-bed bike for several months, witnessing firsthand its transformative impact on patient recovery and wellbeing.
Early rehabilitation is a proven method to enhance physical recovery, reduce fatigue and muscle weakness, and support better mood and sleep patterns for patients recovering from critical illness. The over-bed bike allows staff to initiate gentle physical therapy right at the bedside, promoting strength, independence, and improved outcomes for patients.
The commitment and compassion of the ICU team are truly inspiring. Their efforts not only highlight the importance of innovative healthcare solutions but also demonstrate the power of community support in enhancing patient care.
Lancastrian Estates is proud to support such a meaningful cause in our community. We encourage everyone to contribute to the Rehab 500 Challenge and help make a difference in the lives of those in need. Donations can be made at the Bay Hospitals Charity website.
Join us in cheering on the ICU team as they take on this remarkable challenge, showcasing the spirit and resilience of Lancaster. Together, we can help provide the best possible care for our community.
