Did you know? – Morecambe Tower

The Morecambe Tower

Did you know that Morecambe once had a tower like the Eiffel Tower and Blackpool Tower?

Construction of the Morecambe Tower began in 1898, not free-standing like the towers mentioned above, but as part of a larger theatre structure.

The ‘cone-like’ shape stood at 232ft and was set to rival tourism of Blackpool Tower that was built only 4 years early.

Unfortunately, it had a difficult start, and although it eventually opened to the public in 1912, the tower was demolished at the start of the First World War to provide steel for munitions.

A worthy cause, but what could have the tower done for tourism in Morecambe?
