In the heart of Morecambe, a local hero has emerged, knitting her way into the hearts of many. Edna Williamson, a spirited 79-year-old, has raised an impressive £150 for the Royal British Legion by knitting poppies for Remembrance Day. Her dedication and talent were celebrated at a special presentation at Vale View day centre in Lancaster, where Edna is a cherished regular.

Edna’s knitting journey began in her youth, and her passion was reignited three years ago when her grandson, Morgan Stimson, joined the military. She crafted poppies for him and his colleagues, sparking a project that would grow into a community effort. Since then, Edna has become a beloved member of the ‘knit and natter’ club at Vale View, a weekly gathering that has provided her with companionship and purpose since the passing of her husband in 2005.

Her artistic flair extends beyond poppies; Edna has also created a model of the Winter Gardens on Morecambe promenade, which was proudly displayed in an exhibition. Her involvement in arts and crafts, supported by a local Lancaster artist, has enriched her life and those around her.

Edna’s poppies were in high demand, with around 200 sold to fellow Vale View members, staff, and the congregation at Sefton Road Church, where Edna is a devoted attendee. Her efforts culminated in a heartfelt donation to the Royal British Legion, received by member Jane Ward.

Adding to her accolades, Edna recently met Lancaster MP Cat Smith, who wore one of Edna’s poppies in Parliament, highlighting the impact of her work. Edna’s story is a testament to the power of community, creativity, and the difference one person can make.
