Lancaster John O’Gaunt Rowing Club has been shortlisted for the prestigious World Rowing Awards, thanks to its innovative Refugee Rowing Integration Programme. This nomination for Rowing Programme of the Year highlights the club’s dedication to fostering community spirit and inclusivity through the sport of rowing.

The World Rowing Awards, set to take place in Lausanne, Switzerland, in January 2026, recognises programmes that exemplify excellence and integrity within the rowing community. Lancaster John O’Gaunt RC, one of the UK’s oldest rowing clubs, is proudly run by volunteers who are passionate about making rowing accessible to everyone. Their inclusive ‘Learn to Row’ courses cater to people from all walks of life, including schools, U3A, and the wider community.

The Refugee Rowing Integration Programme was inspired by Lancaster’s designation as a City of Sanctuary in 2017. With the support of local charity Global Link, the club has created a nurturing environment for refugees and asylum seekers. This initiative provides a safe and welcoming space where individuals can learn to row and feel part of a supportive community.

Lancaster John O’Gaunt RC’s efforts are a testament to the power of sport in bridging cultural divides and fostering a sense of belonging. The club’s commitment to inclusivity and community engagement sets a benchmark for others to follow.
