The Lancaster Lionesses, the UK’s pioneering women’s community rugby club, has scored a major victory, securing a £10,000 grant from Royal London and The British & Irish Lions. This funding, awarded through the Championing Women and Girls’ Rugby Award, recognises the club’s dedication to fostering a sustainable pathway for women and girls in rugby union within Lancaster and its neighbouring areas.
In collaboration with the successful Lancaster University Women’s Rugby Club, the Lionesses are committed to outreach and community engagement. They have crafted a rugby experience that starts with women and girls, offering open training days and taster sessions. These initiatives provide a welcoming, pressure-free environment for newcomers to explore the sport.
Beyond the pitch, the Lancaster Lionesses are active volunteers, forging genuine connections across Lancashire’s towns and villages. Their recent focus on girls and teens includes planning youth rugby camps and building partnerships with schools and after-school clubs. This community-centric approach not only strengthens local ties but also inspires the next generation of female rugby players.
With the newly acquired funding, the Lionesses aim to expand their minis, juniors, and girls’ rugby pathways. They plan to enhance community engagement, break down financial barriers, and make rugby more accessible to women and girls. This initiative promises to create long-term opportunities and solidify the club’s impact on women’s rugby in the region.
At Lancastrian Estates, we celebrate such community achievements and understand the importance of local engagement.
