Prepare for an evening of mesmerising music as the Haffner Orchestra graces Lancaster’s Ashton Hall on Saturday, June 21. This concert promises a captivating blend of classical masterpieces, featuring Stölzel’s “City Beautiful,” Barber’s Violin Concerto, and Dvorak’s New World Symphony.

Under the baton of conductor Alex Robinson, the orchestra will open with Ingrid Stölzel’s “City Beautiful.” Known for its tender and hauntingly lyrical qualities, this piece reflects Stölzel’s belief in the power of beauty to foster community spirit. Her music, much like the beautification of our surroundings, aims to inspire and unite.

The evening continues with Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto, performed by the talented soloist Sophie Rosa. Currently the Leader of Sinfonia Viva, Sophie is renowned for her guest appearances with numerous UK orchestras. Barber’s Violin Concerto, commissioned by soap magnate Samuel Fels, has an intriguing backstory involving mystery and debate over its playability. Despite its dramatic origins, it has become one of the most frequently performed concertos of the 20th century.

Concluding the concert is Dvorak’s New World Symphony, a piece that promises to leave audiences in awe with its rich melodies and emotional depth.

Join the Haffner Orchestra for this unforgettable musical journey. The concert begins at 7.30pm, with a pre-concert talk at 6.30pm. Tickets are priced at £17 for adults, while those 18 and under can attend for free. Students and benefits claimants can enjoy the concert for just £6, and essential carers of the disabled are admitted free. Secure your tickets at Haffner Orchestra’s website.
