This March, Morecambe will be alive with the sound of music as the Promenade Concert Orchestra pays tribute to the town’s beloved comedian, Eric Morecambe. In a fitting homage, the orchestra will perform “Bring Me Sunshine,” the iconic theme tune of Morecambe and Wise, as part of a special concert celebrating Eric’s centenary. Born in May 1926, Eric Morecambe’s legacy continues to bring joy to his hometown.

The concert, aptly titled “Music From The Palm Court,” will take place at The Platform on Sunday, March 22, at 3 pm. It promises to be a delightful afternoon, featuring a mix of well-known tunes and rare gems from the past two centuries. Among the highlights is “Take Me Down to Morecambe,” a song composed for the town’s 1926 carnival, newly orchestrated by the orchestra’s founder and conductor, Howard Rogerson.

The Promenade Concert Orchestra, the UK’s only large palm court orchestra, will also perform rarities such as “The Comet,” a lively piccolo solo not heard for a century, and a suite of ballet music from Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s opera “Hiawatha,” celebrating the 150th anniversary of the black English composer. Additionally, there will be a rare performance of “Descriptive Fantasia, Gipsy Life” by Charles le Thiere.

Established in 2007, the orchestra features a talented mix of professional, semi-professional, and amateur musicians from the Lancaster, Morecambe, and Kendal areas. Tickets for this enchanting event are priced at £18, with free entry for accompanied children. To book, contact the box office at 01524 582803, email platformboxoffice@lancaster.gov.uk, or visit the official website.
